I spent N500m on ‘Malaika’, had panic attacks, hospitalised due to piracy – Toyin Abraham

Nollywood luminary Toyin Abraham disclosed on Tuesday the profound toll that piracy has taken on her mental well-being, sharing with reporters that the illicit replication of her creative endeavors led to panic attacks and necessitated hospitalization on multiple occasions. The actress, renowned for her contributions to the Nigerian film industry, made these revelations in Lagos on the same day the police announced the apprehension of five suspects linked to the piracy of her movie, ‘Malaika,’ a cinematic venture that reportedly incurred a staggering cost of approximately N500 million.

Expressing her commitment to combating the scourge of piracy that plagues the entertainment industry, Toyin Abraham commended the police, particularly AIG Idowu Owohunwa, for their decisive action in apprehending the suspects. In her candid remarks, she underscored the immense financial investment and personal dedication involved in producing ‘Malaika,’ making the impact of piracy even more distressing.

The Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Ikoyi Lagos, had earlier announced the arrest of five suspects, including two women, implicated in the alleged piracy of ‘Malaika.’ ASP Aminat Mayegun, the spokesperson for the department, revealed that the suspects faced charges of conspiracy, infringement on intellectual property, piracy, and cyber-related crimes, particularly the unauthorized dissemination of the movie through the cyberspace.

According to Mayegun, the criminal complaint filed by Toyin Abraham and Seun Olayemi, the co-producer of ‘Malaika,’ detailed how the movie, originally slated for exclusive cinema viewing starting December 21, 2023, was criminally accessed, uploaded to a website, and provided as a streaming link on social media platforms. The complainants alleged a blatant infringement on their intellectual rights, accusing the suspects of unlawfully profiting from their work while depriving them of legitimate earnings.

In response to the petition, the FCID initiated a joint investigation, deploying specialized units in anti-fraud and cybercrime sections. The collaboration resulted in the arrest of the suspects, with AIG Owohunwa expressing the commitment of the FCID to collaborate with the movie industry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission to eradicate criminal elements from the creative space. As this story unfolds, it highlights the ongoing struggle to protect intellectual property in the digital age and the importance of concerted efforts to curb piracy in the entertainment sector.
