“My dad tried to stop me from becoming an artiste after he prevented me from being an artist” – Spyro

In a candid revelation, popular Nigerian singer Spyro opened up about a significant aspect of his personal journey, sharing that despite possessing a talent for drawing, his aspirations as a professional artist were thwarted by his father. Spyro detailed the parental opposition he encountered when he opted to shift his focus from drawing to pursuing a career in music.

According to Spyro, his father not only discouraged him from pursuing drawing professionally but also expressed vehement disapproval when he decided to venture into the realm of music. The artist narrated the challenges he faced, recounting how his pastor father attempted to dissuade him from becoming a singer, a resistance that, ultimately, proved unsuccessful.

Speaking on the Tea With Tay podcast with host Taymesan, Spyro provided insights into the contentious moments with his father, describing the strong disagreement and evident displeasure that accompanied his choice to pursue a career in the music industry.

Despite the familial opposition, Spyro delved into the resilience that fueled his passion for music. Striking out on his own, the “Who’s Your Guy” hitmaker shared that he found himself engaged in unconventional and mundane occupations, such as selling recharge cards. These endeavors served as a means for him to not only cover his expenses but also to fund studio time, allowing him to create and compose the songs that would ultimately define his musical journey.

Spyro’s journey underscores the challenges many artists face in pursuing their passions, grappling with familial expectations and societal norms. His determination to overcome obstacles and pursue his love for music highlights the resilience and dedication required to carve out a space in the competitive world of the music industry.

He said;

“Being a pastor, my dad never wanted me to do music. I was a fine artist before. I could draw so well but for one reason or the other, he stopped me from doing that. Then I started music. He also wanted to stop me from doing that then I got rebellious.

I have always had a flair for music right from primary school. I was in the church choir. And I was really good. All the choir masters back then always commended my talent. I was also playing the drum set back then. But my dad never wanted me to do music. It was war. But I knew it was what God has called me to do.

After my secondary education, I started recording songs at the studio. I was selling recharge cards back then because I had to make ends meet even though I had parents that were feeding me. But I had to hustle to pay for my lifestyle and book studio time.”
