Nigerian hip-hop sensation Olamide opens up about the inspiration behind his thriving label, *** No Laptop.

For more than ten years, Olamide has dominated the Nigerian music scene, establishing himself as one of Africa’s most successful artists. His contributions have reshaped the landscape of indigenous rap and Street Music in Nigeria, paving the way for commercial success.

Speaking on Apple Music Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madiba, Olamide, who recently dropped his highly anticipated tenth album ‘Unruly,’ discusses his eagerness to return to the stage.

“While I think my last time on stage was probably at Mr. Money’s concert in London last year, this year in December, if you’re heading to Ghana, make a stop in Nigeria! I’m planning my concert here. And right after that, next summer, I’m gearing up for a US and Europe tour. I’m getting back on the road, man.”

Olamide discloses that his drive to tour again is fueled by his dedicated fans, who have been urging him to hit the road. He also reveals that his absence was intentional, allowing him to align with Afrobeats’ current international rise.

“My fans have been calling out, ‘Yo, come outside! Come play!’ Now I’m ready. I’ve been putting in the work, grounding myself and syncing with the times. The new wave is crazy right now, and you’ve got to find a way to stay relevant, which isn’t simple. I’ve been at it for a while. That’s why it took me this long.”

Beyond his music career, Olamide also oversees YBNL, which he established in 2012 after departing ID Cabasa’s Coded Tunes.

The label has propelled numerous stars into the spotlight, including Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Fireboy, and producers Pheelz and Young Jonn. More recently, Asake joined the roster.

Olamide explains that he founded YBNL to reinvest in his passion, choosing not to squander his fortune on extravagant living.

“The world adores my work, and I’m thankful for it. But now, it’s time to reinvest in the same thing that has earned me love and appreciation. It began as a passion, but it’s high time I elevated it, invested, and transformed it into a proper business. I created my own label, began signing artists because I didn’t want all that money to be wasted on extravagance. The funds needed to go back into the grind. That’s how it all began.”

Olamide’s landmark tenth album ‘Unruly’ was released on August 9th, 2023 which was heralded bu the singles ‘Trumpet’ featuring CKay and ‘New Religion’ featuring Asake. According to Olamide, the album is likely to be his last and it offers listeners a bittersweet experience as they look back on the career of the legendary artist.

“Portable – Let’s Promote Afrobeats and Leave Amapiano for South Africans”

“Portable Urges Nigerian Artists to Prioritize Afrobeats Over Amapiano After Grammy Outcome”

In response to South African singer Tyla’s Grammy win over Nigerian artists like Burna Boy and Davido, controversial artiste Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, advises Nigerian musicians to focus on promoting Afrobeats instead of Amapiano. Portable emphasized the importance of valuing Nigeria’s genre and suggested that sticking to Afrobeats would enhance Nigeria’s chances of winning international awards. He referenced the evolution of music styles, mentioning the prevalence of shaku shaku before the emergence of Amapiano. Portable asserted that Amapiano belongs to South Africans and cautioned that pursuing it wouldn’t lead Nigerians to Grammy success.

Some comments from social media users:

@lappoosky: “Even when Tyla won the award, they still played a Fela song.”

@Macy_Macy0: “After South Africa and Nigeria play, then we’ll decide this one.”

@Mahasmaan: “Brother, unlike Nigerians, South Africans don’t try to claim or imitate Afrobeats, we consume them raw. Nigerians are suffering from main character syndrome, you wouldn’t stand watching an SA genre shine!”

Here are some additional comments:

@HappinessUgboma: “It’s true what Portable said. We don’t value our Afrobeats, yet we want to use it to win a Grammy. It’s impossible. But when we use our own, it will go a long way and stand tall.”

@MaziLeeTweets: “I’ve been suggesting this: let’s leave Amapiano to them and focus on our Afrobeats. Nigerian producers should return to the drawing board and create fresh, distinctive sounds. I have confidence in SARS on this matter.”

@Sami011y: “The funny part is Amapiano isn’t the popular genre in SA. House music is more popular than Amapiano. Amapiano was just a smoke screen to generate attention for SA music! West Africans must stick to our Afrobeats because we sound very funny doing Amapiano!”
